Article: Buttercups & Their Standard

By A. O. Schilling, 1913 & 1914

Buttercups & Their Standard - Parts I & II

By A. O. Schilling, 1913 & 1914
American Poultry World - November, 1913 & April, 1914

These articles first appeared as two parts in American Poultry World in November 1913 and April 1914. The American Buttercup Club was first formed in 1912, and much discussion took place over the next few years as to how the Standard for the breed should be defined.

These articles were written by A. O. Schilling himself - the artist behind many of the illustrations in the American Standard of Perfection. In the first article, he presents a standard based on breeders he had spoken with and birds he had observed at shows, and in the second article he revises the standard based on feedback from other breeders. This feedback is included after the second article.

With original illustrations and writing by Schilling and feedback letters from breeders, these two articles provide a valuable insight into the early history and development of the breed.

Buttercups were admitted to the Standard in 1918, and their final standard differs somewhat from the description given in these articles. Therefore, we recommend all Buttercup breeders consult the text found in the latest edition of the APA’s Standard of Perfection or the ABA’s Bantam Standard to learn what the ideal Buttercup should look like.

We have chosen to include both articles together since they are a continuation of the same topic by the same author. This is the same topic as a similar article from 1913 that we included in the summer 2020 newsletter, but this time by a different author.

About the Author

Arthur Oscar Schilling was born in 1882 in Germany, and brought to America as a child by his parents.

He became an accomplished artist as well as an APA certified poultry judge, and greatly influenced the development of standard-bred poultry in America.

In 1905, at the age of 22, several of Schilling’s illustrations were selected for inclusion in the American Standard of Perfection. Today, the Standard is filled with his work.

He passed away in 1958 at the age of 76.
