"The Crown of the Fancy"

Our Mission

The American Buttercup Club is dedicated to the preservation, promotion, and advancement of the Sicilian Buttercup breed in both large fowl and bantam forms.

Promote the Breed

As a beautiful, unusual, and productive egg laying heritage breed, Sicilian Buttercups deserve a place in any poultry flock. The core mission of the club is to promote the preservation and advancement of this incredible rare breed.

Our club serves to:
  • Reach out to and establish new breeders, both young and old
  • Educate the public and new breeders about this rare and unusual breed
  • Encourage the exhibition of Buttercups at poultry shows
  • Provide access to old articles and publish new articles about the breed and sound breeding practices
  • Display a presence in the poultry world at shows and fairs and through publications to promote the breed
  • Organize meets for the club at American Poultry Association sanctioned poultry shows

Connect Breeders

One of the most useful utilities of the club is the distribution of the breeders directory.

The breeders directory makes it possible for new members to get their hands on high quality stock, and for breeders of both large fowl and bantam Buttercups to find each other and share their bloodlines to improve the breed.

If you are a Buttercup breeder and a member of the club, we will include your website on our links page! Just contact us with your link!

Improve the Breed

Sicilian Buttercups are a rare heritage breed. It is critical that we grow the number of breeders to not only save and preserve the breed, but also to improve the breed.

Rare breeds have less genetic diversity, and fewer advanced breeders to improve the quality of the available stock. Breeding poultry is a never ending journey, and no breed is ever perfect. Buttercups are beautiful birds and superb egg layers, but still need improvement in both productive and show aspects across the board. Breeding improvements will help the Buttercup realize its potential as a great bird for home egg production as well as the show room.

The club provides useful resources and articles to breeders on how they can help use their breeding program improve the breed, whether they hatch just a few chicks each year, or many.
